Transportation

PROGRAM
DESCRIPTION

Since 1975, Arc Mid-Cities Transportation Services has transported not only consumers to the program sites but also other consumers who are attending other programs in the neighboring areas.

At the present time, we operate a fleet of sixty (60) vans and buses equipped with wheelchair lifts.  Five hundred (500) consumers are transported daily.

In an attempt to make things easier for the care providers and parents, our transportation program makes every effort to cater to their schedules.  Drivers assist any and all consumers who have mobility or behavioral problems.

SERVICES PROVIDED

Consumers are picked-up at their homes and brought to their day programs in the morning.  During the day, the drivers provide transportation for the consumers to go on field trips.  Then, in the afternoon, the drivers pick-up the consumers at their day program and bring them to their homes.

SCOPE OF SERVICES

Our transportation services cover all areas of South Central Los Angeles, Carson, Gardena, Torrance, Paramount, and the southwestern part of East Los Angeles.

Arc Mid-Cities has been certified by the Los Angeles Board of Transportation, the California Highway Patrol, and the South Central Los Angeles Regional Center to operate as a transportation service provider.

 DRIVER QUALIFICATIONS

All of Arc Mid-Cities drivers are trained Class B license holders and certified by the California Department of Motor Vehicles.  The have also taken courses in both first aid and CPR,  administered by the American Red Cross.

All drivers are provided with training regarding how to properly transport the consumer by following the Consumer Transportation Procedures.  In addition, all drivers are provided with training regarding how to handle an emergency situation on the road, such as an automobile accident.  All written policies and procedures are outlined in the “Vehicle Black Book” which is kept in each of the vehicles.

VEHICLE MAINTENANCE

Arc Mid-Cities has an extensive preventive inspection/maintenance program.  Daily inspections of the vans are conducted using a “Daily Maintenance Sheet” completed by every driver before they leave the yard.  Every vehicle is inspected by the mechanic every 3,000 miles or 90 days and a Maintenance and Inspection” sheet is completed and filed with the transportation manager.  The California Highway Patrol comes out to inspect all the vehicles every six (6) months.  The report is filed with the transportation manager and placed in the individual vehicle folders.

HOURS OF OPERATION

The schedule of operations is from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. for pick-up from their homes and from 3:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. for drop-off Mondays through Fridays.

FUNDING

Funding is from the Department of Developmental Services through its various regional centers.
